US Hormuz blockade a lawful wartime move to pressure Iran, says analyst
The United States military began a blockade of ships leaving Iran’s ports on Monday (Apr 13), raising fears of further disruption to global oil flows and commercial shipping in the vital Strait of Hormuz. James Kraska, chair of the Stockton Center for International Law at the US Naval War College and visiting professor at Harvard Law School, tells CNA’s Asia First that the blockade is a lawful measure under naval warfare rules, designed to exert economic pressure on Tehran. Neutral ships are legally required to comply with US inspections, and those that refuse could face enforcement action, he adds.
