Through music, they speak to the world: band of disabled children moves millions #CGTN

What made their performance truly special was not only their angelic voices – but the journey that brought them to the stage – they are students with disabilities from a special education school in Yunyang County, Chongqing. The lead singer and keyboardist, Ni Wanxin, is visually impaired. Guitarist Gong Yuxin and bassist Qu Xinyue both have hearing impairments. Drummer Zhang Xuanrui is on the autism spectrum. Together, they performed a heartfelt song that has since moved millions online.

The band’s name, “Firefly to Galaxy Plan,” reflects a simple yet powerful belief: each child may only shine as a faint firefly, but together, they can light up the night like a brilliant galaxy, and illuminate the path for others as well as themselves. The name also tells how their story began.

The formation of this band was more like a whim. Yet, through hours upon hours of practice, each small glow adding to the next in their studio, they mastered their first song in about two weeks. Since then, they have gone on to perform for more audiences.

“My child has grown more confident and communicative since taking up the drums,” said Zhang Xuanrui’s mom.

Now, a second band of students from the same school is following in the Firefly’s footsteps. From four children to eight, from one band to a growing wave of passion and hope – their story continues to empower, encourage and inspire.
