We Talk: Brazilian film scholar says cinema key to China-Brazil cultural exchange #CGTN

The 16th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) has opened in China’s capital, bringing film lovers together in front of the big screen from April 16 to 25. In recent years, Chinese cinema has showcased an evolving landscape of genres and technological innovation. Through these works, international audiences are also discovering a more imaginative and contemporary China.

Vitória Severo, a Brazilian film studies professor and researcher, pointed out that the BJIFF has been continuously deepening its connections with Brazilian cinema over the years; From screening “City of God” in 2015 and hosting the “Brazilian Film Week” in 2024, to the selection of “Isabel” for the Tiantan Awards in 2025, the BJIFF has showcased a diverse range of outstanding Brazilian films that address various social issues in the country. Severo fell in love with Chinese cinema through Jia Zhangke’s “Platform” and “Still Life,” particularly appreciating the poetic expressions of time and the “flow” of cities in his works. She believes that film festivals serve as a bridge for cultural exchange between China and Brazil, and that the “Forward Future” section provides a vital platform for emerging directors. She hopes that Chinese cinema will continue its artistic exploration and that the Brazilian audience will have more opportunities to engage with Chinese works, fostering stronger collaboration between filmmakers from both nations. Regarding AI, she noted that the technology has already deeply integrated into Chinese film production and academic discussions, whereas such discussions in Brazil remain relatively insufficient.
