Major fire erupts at Australian oil refinery, threatening fuel supply
A massive fire has broken out at Viva Energy’s oil refinery in Geelong, Victoria, one of only two remaining oil refineries in Australia. The blaze, which started around 11pm local time, is described as unprecedented in scale by Geelong’s mayor. While the fire remains uncontrolled, it is currently contained within the plant, and all staff have been accounted for with no injuries reported.

The refinery supplies 50% of Victoria’s fuel and 10% of Australia’s total fuel demand, producing petrol, diesel, and jet fuel. Australia’s energy minister confirmed that petrol production will be impacted for some time, with the plant continuing at reduced capacity. The incident adds further strain to Australia’s already stressed energy supply, coming just a week after Viva Energy struck a deal with the Australian government to secure more energy, and amid ongoing energy concerns related to the conflict in the Middle East.
