Tata Motors shares fell nearly 3% after reports of a massive cyberattack on its UK subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The attack, which occurred on September 2, has forced the closure of three major plants—Solihull, Halewood, and Wolverhampton—where around 1,000 cars were produced daily. Reports suggest that JLR could face an uninsured loss of about €2 billion (₹2.08 lakh crore), exceeding its total FY25 profit.
Without cyber insurance in place, the company may have to bear the entire cost of damages. The shutdown is reportedly causing weekly losses of around £50 million (₹596 crore). JLR has announced a phased restart of production starting October 1, rather than resuming full operations immediately.
Tata Motors Group CFO P.B. Balaji said it is too early to quantify the full impact but assured that the company is closely monitoring its working capital and will clear all dues in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, in India, Tata Motors had a strong festive start with over 10,000 deliveries and 25,000 enquiries on the first day of Navratri. In FY25, JLR contributed nearly 72% of Tata Motors’ total automotive revenue, highlighting its importance to the group’s global earnings.
