From September 1, 2025, hallmarking of silver jewellery has officially started in India. Just like gold, silver ornaments such as payal, bichiya, or utensils will now come with a government-certified hallmark. Hallmarking is the process carried out by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure purity and authenticity of precious metals.Every genuine silver jewellery piece will now have three marks – (1) BIS logo (a triangular mark symbolizing government approval), (2) Purity grade such as 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 or 990 (e.g., 925 means 92.5% pure silver), and (3) a unique 6-digit HUID number that lets you trace complete details about the jewellery.
