Yasukuni Shrine: Nine unanswered questions
On April 21, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sent a “masakaki” offering to Yasukuni Shrine, a place regarded by countries in East Asia as a symbol of Japanese militarism. On the same day, the Japanese government revised the “Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology,” a move that, in principle, allows for the export of lethal arms. These provocative actions only serve to fuel the demands for Japan to confront its past. Forty-eight years ago, 14 Class-A war criminals were secretly enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine. Since then, the emperor has never returned. But the politicians keep going. Why the secret enshrinement? Why is a “shrine of peace” run by military officers? Why did Japan fight a “self-defensive” war on other countries’ soil? These are among the questions related to Yasukuni Shrine that the world is still demanding answers to.
