Visits up, trade up: Why world leaders are knocking on China’s door
In just over 10 days, Beijing has hosted a remarkable series of high-level visitors from Thailand, Spain, the UAE, Vietnam, Russia and Mozambique. These visits come at a time when global energy shocks are intensifying, geopolitical tensions remain high, supply chains are under strain, and many countries are searching for more stable partners and broader diplomatic options. At the same time, China’s economy gets off to a steady start this year: GDP grew 5% year on year and foreign trade hit a record high in the first quarter. What does this say about the resilience of the Chinese economy? Are those foreign visits just crisis management, or a long-term repositioning around China? And what are the challenges and opportunities ahead?
Guests in this episode of Dialogue are Einar Tangen, senior fellow from the Center for International Governance Innovation; Michele Geraci, former undersecretary of state at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development; and Andy Mok, author of “The Innovation Machine.”
