Singapore govt needs to ‘work much harder’ in challenging environment: SM Lee | Full speech
Singapore’s government needs to work much harder to deliver prosperity and progress in the current challenging environment, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong said.

Speaking to civil servants at the annual Administrative Service Dinner on Tuesday (Apr 21), Mr Lee warned that the country’s long-standing “virtuous cycle” of good policies and good government faces greater strain, as geopolitical tensions rise and international cooperation weakens.

“Life has become much more dangerous for a small country like Singapore,” he said.

He stressed the need to continually review and adapt policies. “I’m not suggesting that we should treat current policies as immutable gospel truths to be enshrined and worshipped. Far from it.”

Instead, officers must first master the policies, then constantly review and rethink them, update them as circumstances change and even break the mould “from time to time”.
