Qipao: An enduring icon of oriental fashion
In the 1920s and 1930s, the qipao dress was not only everyday fashion in Shanghai but also an icon through which the world came to know China. A century later, the garment continues to evolve, taking on new meanings. In his qipao workshop, Shanghai tailor Zhou Zhuguang strives to strike a balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics, breathing fresh life into an art that once almost vanished. Meanwhile, with her “qipao beauties,” painter Jiang Xiuyi explores how different eras have perceived femininity and freedom. A Tsinghua University professor also deconstructs the qipao to trace the millennia-old holistic aesthetics and cultural wisdom of Chinese clothing. Tune in to the CGTN documentary “A Stitch in Time: The Legend and Renewal of Qipao.”
