Prime Minister Accuses CARICOM Of “Corrupt Backroom Operation”
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC is accusing CARICOM of what she describes as a “corrupt backroom operation”, saying it is undermining the regional body and harming Caribbean citizens.

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, the Prime Minister criticised a recent post by CARICOM Chairman, St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, which sought to dismiss concerns raised by Trinidad and Tobago over the reappointment of Secretary-General Carla Barnett.

She claimed key issues remain unanswered, including a WhatsApp message allegedly sent to CARICOM Foreign Ministers on the morning of a February retreat, and says no official has come forward to confirm its contents, despite what she describes as evidence supporting Foreign Affairs Minister Sean Sobers.

The Prime Minister further alleged dysfunction and dishonesty within the CARICOM Secretariat, accusing its leadership of favouring political allies over competent technocrats.

Despite the criticism, she made it clear Trinidad and Tobago will remain part of CARICOM, noting the country’s decades-long investment in the regional body. However, she warned that the matter will continue to be publicly pursued until accountability and reforms are achieved, insisting the future of Trinidad and Tobago’s economy, security and development will not be compromised.

The Prime Minister is also maintaining her call for documentation related to the reappointment process, including minutes and performance records.

She ended by reiterating her position that CARICOM must address what she describes as internal failings in the interest of the region’s future.
