Lebanese women show resilience following Israeli attacks
Displaced residents returned to rubble-strewn streets in Lebanon on Saturday, April 18, sifting through the wreckage of Beirut’s southern suburbs after a US-brokered 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect this week. Weeks of intense conflict left widespread destruction across the region, with many remaining hesitant to return permanently amid fears that the fragile truce could collapse.
Rima Mrad, displaced from a frontline border village in southern Lebanon, said she had one goal – to return to the land “where our honor is.”
In some of the hardest-hit areas, entire neighborhoods bore the scars of repeated Israeli strikes. Shops were in ruins, homes reduced to rubble and vital infrastructure severely damaged.
Residents vowed to rebuild. “We’re not afraid,” said Jamila Bassam, another returning displaced resident.
The ceasefire, which took effect on April 16, marked the first direct diplomatic engagement between Israel and Lebanon in decades.
