During the morning rush hour in Seoul, a bus crashed into several vehicles ahead of it.
As in the recent Bucheon traditional market accident, investigators are focusing on the possibility that the driver may have pressed the wrong pedal.
Jung Jae-woo reports.
[Report]
Two buses are stopped side by side on one side of the road.
Up close, their windows and bumpers are heavily crushed.
Inside the bus, debris is scattered everywhere.
At around 7 a.m. today (11.17), seven vehicles collided one after another at an intersection in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.
A city bus first struck an SUV that was waiting at a signal. Without slowing down, it then went on to hit four more vehicles on other lanes.
It finally came to a stop only after colliding with another bus that was entering a stop.
Fourteen people, including bus passengers, were injured.
In the initial police questioning, the bus driver said “there was a problem with the brakes,” but police confirmed—through the bus’s driving recorder and CCTV footage—that the driver had pressed the accelerator, not the brake.
Last week, a car driven by a person in their 60s veered onto the sidewalk, injuring four people.
[Ko Jin-mi/Witness: “There was such a loud noise that I ran outside. A big ginkgo tree was split in two…”]
Police also believe the Bucheon market crash—where 21 people were killed or injured—was caused by pedal misapplication.
[Lee Young-mi/Witness: “I thought something had exploded. As I stepped out, the car just shot past like lightning.”]
The law was revised last year to make pedal misapplication prevention devices mandatory, but the requirement will only take effect in 2029—three years from now.
