Israel-Lebanon talks may result in ‘less fire’, not ceasefire: Analyst
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to direct negotiations for the first time in decades, a significant step towards easing tensions between the two countries amid broader regional strains. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, David Schenker, Taube senior fellow at the Washington Institute and former United States Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, says the talks are “a good start”, noting that Lebanon’s move signals a willingness to assert sovereignty despite pro-Iran militant group Hezbollah’s influence. Schenker expects the talks to result in a “less fire” scenario, with reduced hostilities, continued Israeli presence in parts of southern Lebanon and negotiations over security and borders.
