Iran seizes two vessels for ‘maritime violations’ in Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy said on Wednesday that two vessels were seized in the Strait of Hormuz, for what it described as ‘maritime violations’ and had transferred them to Iranian shores.
In a statement read on State TV, the Guards said the ships, which they identified as the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas, were detained for “operating without the required authorisation and for manipulating navigation systems”, adding that this endangered maritime safety.
US President Donald Trump said he would indefinitely extend the ceasefire with Iran to allow for further peace talks, although it was not clear on Wednesday if Iran or Israel would agree.
But even as he announced what appeared to be a unilateral ceasefire extension, Trump also said he would continue the US Navy’s blockade of Iran’s trade by sea, considered an act of war by Iran.
Iran had condemned the US Navy for intercepting and seizing two commercial Iranian ships at sea as part of its blockade, with its foreign ministry accusing the US of “piracy at sea and state terrorism.”
