Dealing a blow to Pakistan’s efforts, Iran has made it clear that it will not send a delegation for a second round of talks with the United States. According to Iranian state media, there are no guarantees regarding the security of an Iranian delegation in Pakistan; furthermore, the Iranian government lacks trust in Pakistan—a prerequisite that is absolutely essential for such negotiations. This statement by the Iranian media comes as a major setback for Pakistan, which has been striving to establish itself as a key player in West Asia. Iranian officials believe that Pakistan’s military leadership—particularly Asim Munir—leans heavily toward the United States. Tehran fears that, rather than acting as a neutral mediator, Pakistan might instead prioritize and advance American interests. Iran has expressed concern that sensitive intelligence information could potentially be divulged to the United States during the talks held in Pakistan; additionally, doubts have been raised regarding the safety and security of the Iranian representatives.
