Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, the Baojing Dong Village in Zhenyuan County, southwest China’s Guizhou Province, celebrates its traditional Sanyuesan festival, also known as the Scallion-asking Festival, or the Dong people’s version of Valentine’s Day.
At daybreak, young women dress in their finery and carry bamboo baskets to wash scallions and garlic by the pond. Young men then pluck up the courage and try to take the basket off the hands of their love interest. If the feeling is mutual, she will allow him to take it.
During the courtship ritual, Dong folk songs are belted out to express love. Young women may also catch fish and shrimp and present them to their beloved.
This sense of love and rich cultural heritage is also beautifully reflected in the film The Grand Song. On and off the screen, the Dong people’s simple yet enduring traditions continue to be passed down through generations.
