Tennessee explosives plant blast: Presumed death toll lowered to 16 after 2 people confirmed offsite
Despite reporting that 18 people were presumed dead in the Friday explosion that decimated a military explosives plant in Hickman County, Tenn., authorities have lowered the death toll to 16.
Though their vehicles and some personal belongings were found onsite, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed Saturday that two of the individuals unaccounted for – who were initially reported as dead – were not at the Accurate Energetic Systems (AES) building at the time of the incident.
With the latest update, authorities are still operating under the assumption that everyone present at the site Friday is now deceased.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, but Assistant Special Agent in Charge Tyra Cunningham, from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, says, “if criminal activity is involved, those responsible will be held accountable.”
“If it was accidental… lessons have been learned to prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again,” Cunningham added.
