Doug Ford doubles down on plan to scrap Ontario speed cameras
Following a statement from the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police pushing back against his plans to scrap automated speed cameras, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has doubled down on his thoughts that speed
traps are simply a “tax grab.”
“There’s a million different ways to slow people down, if that’s truly what they want to do,” Ford told reporters Friday in Markdale, Ont. “I’m going to teach them how to do it next week,” the premier added, suggesting he will further address the matter.
The police statement issued to the Ford government Thursday emphasized that speed cameras have been “proven to reduce speeding” in towns and cities.
This comes after Ford kicked off a plan to force local municipalities to remove cameras from their streets earlier this month, arguing they don’t improve safety and are mainly used to raise money for City Hall.
