Does suspension of Jimmy Kimmel violate freedom of speech?
Concerns about the violation of freedom of speech are at an all-time high in the U.S. this week after broadcast giant ABC indefinitely suspended the ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ show in wake of comments made by the late-night host deemed insensitive by President Donald Trump’s administration.
A large sum of supporters – including fellow comedians and longtime fans – spoke out Thursday, condemning the network’s action against Kimmel. Some even joined picket lines, protesting ABC, Disney Studios, and the U.S. government.
“Nobody should have the mic just pulled out of their hand and told what you’re saying is no longer relevant. That’s unfair to all of us,” comedian Dane Cook said.
“Comedy is the last vestige of free speech that we have. It’s the first wall of defense. It’s what tyranny always takes away first, right?” noted comic Tehran Von Ghasri.
Addressing the matter Thursday, Trump attributed “whack job” Kimmel’s suspension to him having “no talent,” further saying late-night hosts “are not allowed” to criticize him and his administration – which the Republican leader claimed is “all they do.”
