Carney announces new measures to combat crime in Canadian communities | LIVE
Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce new measures “to combat crime and protect Canadian communities,” during a Thursday media availability alongside Secretary of State for Labour John Zerucelli and Secretary of State for Combatting Crime Ruby Sahota.
During the federal election earlier this year, Carney promised stricter measures to tackle offences like violent car theft and a suite of new crime policies. The proposals include tougher bail and sentencing guidelines for some crimes, the creation of new criminal offences involving intimidation at schools and places of worship and online sexploitation.
The Liberals committed to making bail more difficult to get for those charged with car thefts involving violence or connected to a criminal organization, as well as for home invasions and human trafficking and smuggling offences. They also promised tougher sentencing guidelines for repeat car thieves and violent and organized crimes.
