Global NewsUK bans cigarette purchases for people born after 2008

The British Parliament has passed a bill proposing the toughest anti-smoking measures in the world. Children born after Dec. 31, 2008, will be banned from ever buying cigarettes, even as adults. However, opinions surrounding the ban are mixed.
British Health Minister Gillian Merron called it a “landmark bill,” suggesting “it will create a smoke-free generation. It is in fact the biggest public health intervention in a generation.”
While British MPs insist it will save lives and ease pressure on the overburdened health care system, this isn’t the first time a smoking ban has been enforced. New Zealand passed a similar law in 2022, but it was scrapped after a conservative government came to power.
