Global NewsCriminal networks in Canada exploit international students from India for extortion schemes: report

Canada’s financial intelligence agency FINTRAC says extortion targeting South Asian communities has surged in 2026, with more cases reported this year than in the previous two combined.
The agency has tracked over 63,000 suspicious transactions and identified more than 300 individuals linked to extortion-related activity across multiple provinces.
Officials say organized crime groups are recruiting financially vulnerable international students, particularly young Indian men, to act as “money mules” and carry out threats.
In some cases, demands escalate into violence, including shootings and arson prompting the launch of a national crackdown known as Operation TAPEX. Nivrita Ganguly reports.
