Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Western countries of using the Ukraine conflict as a pretext to impose punitive measures on nations like India and China that maintain strong economic ties with Moscow. Putin made the remarks during his four-day visit to China, where he held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. He said the Ukraine issue was “just a pretext” to target countries whose economic relations “are not to someone’s liking”, adding that the topic was barely discussed at the summit. His comments come days after US President Donald Trump imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian imports, citing India’s continued purchase of cheap Russian oil. The move has caused a sharp downturn in India-US relations, with the Ministry of External Affairs calling the tariffs “unreasonable” and “unjustified.”
