CNA Latest landmine incident puts Thai-Cambodia peace deal to the test, expert says
A landmine blast near the Thai-Cambodian border on Monday (Nov 10) has reignited tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours, just weeks after they signed a peace declaration in Kuala Lumpur. While the agreement technically remains in place, the incident in Thailand’s Sisaket province has eroded trust between both sides, notes Assistant Professor Thanapat Chatinakrob of Bangkok’s Thammasat University. He tells CNA’s Asia First that verifying whether the mines are newly planted or remnants of past conflicts is crucial, as new deployments would breach international law and deepen mistrust.
