China names newly discovered lunar mineral after ‘Chang’e’ #coolchina
China announced that a newly identified lunar mineral is the 11th new lunar mineral discovered by humanity. The mineral was found in the first lunar meteorite recovered in China, a 44-gram specimen with a dark molten crust. It is colorless and transparent, has a glassy luster, is brittle, and exhibits a clear fluorescent effect. Its grains range from about 3 to 25 micrometers in size, usually less than 10 micrometers.
“Chang’e” refers to the moon goddess in Chinese mythology and reflects China’s lunar exploration program. Experts say the mineral’s fluorescent properties give it potential in LED phosphor materials, while its rare-earth ratio, magnesium-iron content, and crystal structure could provide useful clues for synthetic materials research. #coolchina
