Bangladesh Waterway Transport Crippled As Energy Crisis Triggers Fuel Shortage Amid Middle East War
Waterway transport across Bangladesh has been disrupted after a massive energy crisis hit the country. Acting President, Bangladesh Inland Waterways (PC) Association, Al-haj Md. Badiuzzaman Badal said, “… Passenger vessel operators report fuel shortages. Daily consumption ranges from 250 to 700 litres per vessel, but actual demand is around 200,000 to 300,000 litres, especially in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Barisal, Bhola and a few others. They rely solely on passenger vessels, with three engines per ship – two main and one generator – consuming large amounts of diesel and lubricating oil. Currently, supply is insufficient, with a 40% shortage. Fuel is purchased through agencies at high rates, increasing costs by 15%. Owners suffer losses daily, though passengers are not directly affected. Around 450 vessels operate nationwide, with 50 running daily from Dhaka, carrying 30,000–40,000 passengers. Operators urge the government and BIWTA (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority) to adjust fare charts to match rising fuel prices…”
