US ends sanctions waiver for Iran’s Chabahar Port; creates trouble for India to access Afghanistan?
US administration under Trump has announced the withdrawal of the sanctions waiver for Iran’s Chabahar port, which India has been developing. The India-led development of the port in Iran was as part of a new transportation corridor designed to boost Afghanistan’s economy. This waiver, initially granted in 2018, will end on September 29, 2025, reinstating sanctions on the strategically important port. The move, part of Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy against Iran, poses a significant setback for India’s access to Afghanistan and Central Asia via Chabahar. The sanctions, however, threatened India’s ability to obtain financing for the development of Chabahar. This project could potentially open the way for millions of dollars of trade for land-locked Afghanistan and end its dependence on Pak’s port of Karachi. The US State Department emphasized that lifting the waiver aligns with isolating Iran.
