UN Security Council lifts sanctions on Syrian President Al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington Visit
UNSC lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his U.S. visit on Monday. The U.S.-drafted resolution also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister AnasKhattab. The UNSC resolution passed with 14 votes in favour, while China abstained from the vote. Trump administration had urged the 15-member Council for months to ease sanctions on Syria. U.S. President Donald Trump announced in May a major policy shift to lift U.S. sanctions on Syria. U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz said the vote shows Syria has entered a new era post-Assad regime. Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December after a lightning offensive by insurgents led by HTS. HTS, once al Qaeda’s branch in Syria, cut ties in 2016 and remains under UN sanctions. HTS members face travel bans, asset freezes, and arms embargoes under UN measures. Sanctions on Al-Sharaaand AnasKhattab have now been officially lifted by the Council. UN monitors reported no active ties between al Qaeda and Hay’atTahrir al-Sham (HTS) this year.
