After no-deal Alaska summit, Trump announces Budapest meeting with Putin before Zelenskyy’s US visit
Ahead of the Trump-Zelenskyy meeting in Washington on October 17, Trump dialed Putin on October 16 and had an extensive conversation. Taking to Truth Social, the President shared details of the developments during the call. Trump called the conversation “productive” and said that Putin congratulated him for accomplishing peace in the war-torn Middle East. In a significant development, both leaders agreed to another summit to discuss ending the “inglorious” war in Ukraine. Trump said that he and Putin would soon meet in Budapest, Hungary, following the phone call that lasted more than two hours. “President Putin and I will meet in Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this inglorious war to an end,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The meeting will be the second encounter between the two leaders in recent times, following the ‘no-deal’ Alaska Summit in August 2025.
