‘Hamas absolved itself from delivering opinion on future of Gaza’
Sami Al-Arian, a professor of public affairs at Istanbul Zaim University, says President Trump’s plan included most of the main topics of negotiations over Gaza – such as the exchange of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli captives in return for ending the war, the withdrawal of the Israeli army, as well as the return of aid into Gaza and the reconstruction of the enclave.
He stressed that the part on the Israeli military’s withdrawal was “very vague” and was the main discussion point in the negotiations, in a reminder that most of the talks failed in the past over this element.
“Trump also included parts on the future of Gaza in his plan,” said Al-Arian, adding that Hamas absolved itself from delivering an opinion on the future of Gaza by saying that it should be a collective Palestinian decision.
“The surprising part is that Trump embraced this decision, and I would say that he knows what he is doing.”
