Today, Bengal and Tamil Nadu witnessed a bumper voter turnout, shattering all previous records. In Tamil Nadu, voting stood at approximately 82 percent—a figure ten percent higher than that of the previous election. In Bengal, the first phase of polling across 152 seats recorded a turnout of about 91.68 percent, which is roughly seven percent higher than the previous election. This marks the first instance in any assembly election where voter turnout has exceeded 90 percent. Until now, the record for the highest voter turnout was held by Puducherry; voting took place in Puducherry on April 9, recording a turnout of 89.87 percent. However, Bengal broke this record today, registering a polling rate of nearly 92 percent. All political parties are interpreting the enthusiasm displayed by voters in Bengal as a sign favoring their respective camps; specifically, BJP leaders have claimed that this tremendous voter turnout signals a mandate for change in Bengal.
