Tobago Residents Enjoy Free Bus Rides To Mark World Public Transportation Day
To commemorate World Public Transportation Day, locals and visitors in Tobago had the opportunity to get free bus rides on all routes throughout the island.
World Public Transportation Day, observed on April 17th, 2026, is a new annual global initiative organised by UITP (International Association of Public Transport) to celebrate the essential role of, and advocate for, public transportation.
With this in mind, the THA Division of Public Infrastructure and Transportation partnered with the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) to offer free bus rides to highlight the vital role public transportation plays in connecting people to jobs, education, and services.
THA Secretary Nathisha Charles-Pantin reflected on the role of public transportation over the years.
“Long ago, when you going to school, you take the bus, you go to work, you take the bus, and overtime you would have seen that the numbers have reduced in terms of people taking public transportation.”
The initiative, aimed at encouraging the public to consider buses for public transportation more, is one that PTSC General Manager, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Gomez, was eager to support.
“Today we are running nine buses on all routes, free of charge for all citizens of Tobago.”
Notice of the free bus rides spread far and wide, attracting curious people, like Farilye Charles.
She told TTT News, “It’s a very long time I haven’t traveled with a bus. Right. I was surprised when I came in the bus because the buses are designed differently now. I almost lose my step, because I didn’t know you have to step up.”
Another passenger, Renel Alfred-James, reported a pleasant experience.
“As a matter of fact somebody behind me said ‘wait you sleeping?’ Yes, so it is very relaxing. What I like about the bus right is the fact that you have your own seat. You know when you catch a car you have to cram up so closely next to one another in one single seat.”
While there lingers concerns about the reliability of buses on the island, Secretary Charles-Pantin assured that the THA is working closely with PTSC to improve the service.
Finance Secretary Petal-Ann Roberts said they are exploring ways to reduce the carbon footprint of buses.
“Maybe on a smaller scale, a smaller number, and smaller buses, smaller actual vessels, the energy efficient ones to do the rural areas of Tobago.”
The venture cost the THA only $11,000. Free bus rides were available up until 10pm on Friday.
Thank you for your support in keeping this website running.💛
