The US military enforced blockade in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea from 1400 GMT on Monday. Direct negotiations between the United States and Iran ended on April 12 without a breakthrough, as both sides cited an impasse over fundamental issues and a climate of mutual distrust.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the negotiations were held in an “atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion,” adding that the two sides differed on two to three key issues.
