It has been revealed that a significant number of our citizens feel lonely on a regular basis.
According to the government’s first survey, 4 out of 10 people reported feeling lonely, and many also expressed feelings of isolation beyond just loneliness.
Reporter Kim Ji-sook has the story.
[Report]
This man was a credit delinquent last year.
He had no one to help him.
This is because he has been living alone since losing his family in his teenage years.
[Kim ○○/Single-person household/voice altered: “I was doing well at work, but I ended up in debt because I used my credit card too much… If I had family, this wouldn’t have happened.”]
Do you have anyone to interact with or to help you when times are tough?
We asked over 34,000 people aged 13 and older about their ‘social network’.
5.8% of respondents said they have no such relationships.
If one can manage well alone, it may not be a big problem.
So we also asked if they feel lonely on a regular basis.
The intersection of ‘having no social network’ and ‘feeling lonely’ was found in 3.3% of respondents.
This translates to about 1.5 million people in the entire population experiencing emotional isolation.
[Kim ○○/Single-person household/voice altered: “I feel lonely, especially during holidays. When I’m sick. When I go to the hospital and they say to bring a guardian, I have to say, ‘I have no guardian, I am my own guardian.'”]
We also investigated how often people go out in a week.
Less than a day out, 1.7%.
Almost never going out, 1.0%.
Even among those in their 20s, who should be active, 0.9% reported going out less than a day.
They are presumed to be ‘reclusive’ or in a high-risk group.
This is the result of the government’s first survey on isolation and reclusiveness.
[Kim Ji-eun/Director of Social Statistics Planning at the Ministry of Data and Statistics: “While we measured isolation and reclusiveness separately, many of the reasons for infrequent outings seem to be related to isolation issues.”]
Isolation at 3.3%, reclusiveness at 2.7%.
In any case, about 3 out of every 100 citizens require policy support.
