A drug trafficking ring that distributed and used narcotics across the Seoul metropolitan area has been arrested by police.

They used the so-called “throwing method” to exchange drugs — hiding them in remote areas without CCTV, such as mountain trails, fishing spots, and even temples, to evade law enforcement.

Reporter Chu Jae-hoon has the details.

[Report]

As officers dig into the dirt, a yellow-wrapped package emerges.

Inside is methamphetamine, buried underground by the drug ring to deliver to a buyer.

Twenty bundles of 0.6 grams each — enough for about 400 doses.

One man hides a white envelope by the roadside and leaves. Just three minutes later, another man arrives at the same spot, retrieves the package, and calmly walks away.

This is the so-called “throwing method,” in which drugs are hidden at prearranged locations and then picked up for handoff.

While such exchanges usually take place in urban areas or residential neighborhoods, this group used wooded hills and fishing spots where there were no CCTV cameras to avoid detection.

This wooded area in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, is one such location.

They buried the drugs under thick foliage, then took photos or videos of the spot so that only the buyer could find it.

Among the hiding places were even temples around the Seoul metropolitan area.

Using this method, more than 120 people involved in distributing, purchasing, or using methamphetamine were arrested.

The suspects carried weapons and, during arrest, even threatened detectives — mistaking them for members of rival gangs.

[Nam Seong-shin/Chief, Narcotics Crime Investigation Division 1, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency: “An officer was blocking the door with his body when the suspect tried to stab him with a weapon, shouting ‘Who are you?’ — other officers quickly moved in to subdue and arrest him.”]

Police seized 1.6 kilograms of methamphetamine worth about 5.5 billion won on the market and are tracking down the Chinese ringleader, who was placed on Interpol’s Red Notice list two years ago.
