The people of West Bengal have turned out in massive numbers to cast their votes. A veritable tsunami of votes has swept through the polling booths—a wave powerful enough to sweep Mamata Banerjee away, paving the way for the BJP to form the government. Who will survive this tide, and who will find themselves stranded in the currents? This promises to be a truly fascinating spectacle. Has the wind of change finally begun to blow across West Bengal? Voter turnout has reached an astounding 90 percent—a level of participation unprecedented in the history of Bengal. The first phase of polling covered regions where the BJP possesses a strong electoral base. The BJP had been operating on the premise that if they could achieve a “century”—a resounding success—in the first phase, the battle in the subsequent phases would become significantly easier. Indeed, bumper voting has been recorded in constituencies where the BJP previously failed to secure votes; in these very areas, the Hindu electorate turned out in full force to cast their ballots. For whom does this record-breaking 90 percent turnout across 152 seats portend victory? And for whom does it spell a major political setback? I am about to present every single statistic to you.
