Nepal has imposed a ban on several major social media platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter (X), Snapchat, LinkedIn, Reddit, Discord, Signal, and others. The decision came after Nepal’s Supreme Court directed the government to take action against platforms that had not registered with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The government clarified that only those platforms which officially register will be allowed to operate in Nepal. Interestingly, Chinese apps like TikTok and Viber remain unaffected as they are already listed and approved by the Nepalese government. According to officials, banned platforms will stay inactive until they complete the registration process, after which they will be immediately restored. This raises a major question: will global social media giants like Meta, Google, and X comply with Nepal’s new rules, or will they risk losing the Nepali market permanently?

नेपाल में सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म्स पर बड़ा बैन लगा दिया गया है. फेसबुक, यूट्यूब, इंस्टाग्राम, व्हाट्सऐप, ट्विटर (X), स्नैपचैट, लिंक्डइन और कई ऐप्स अब नेपाल में नहीं चल पाएंगे. यह फैसला सुप्रीम कोर्ट के आदेश के बाद लिया गया क्योंकि इन कंपनियों ने नेपाल के सूचना और प्रौद्योगिकी मंत्रालय में रजिस्ट्रेशन नहीं कराया था. सरकार ने कहा है कि जो भी कंपनियां नियम मानकर रजिस्ट्रेशन पूरा करेंगी, उन पर से बैन तुरंत हटा लिया जाएगा. वहीं, टिकटॉक और वाइबर जैसे चीनी ऐप्स पर कोई असर नहीं हुआ क्योंकि ये पहले ही रजिस्टर्ड थे. अब देखना होगा कि फेसबुक, गूगल और ट्विटर जैसी बड़ी कंपनियां नेपाल में रजिस्ट्रेशन करती हैं या मार्केट छोड़ने का जोखिम उठाती हैं.
