In India, gold is not just a precious metal but a part of tradition and culture. People often ask, “How much gold can we legally keep at home?” According to Indian Income Tax rules, there is no upper limit on holding gold if you have valid proof like purchase bills, ITR, or inheritance papers. However, during an Income Tax raid, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has set safe limits under a 1994 circular. Married women can hold up to 500 grams of jewellery, unmarried women up to 250 grams, and male family members up to 100 grams without seizure, even if no proof is shown. Beyond this limit, officers may ask for documents like bills, gift deeds, or bank statements. If proof is available, gold is safe; otherwise, it may be seized. These limits apply only to gold jewellery, not coins or bars, where proof is mandatory. Digital Gold, ETFs, and Sovereign Gold Bonds are excluded from these rules. Knowing these rules helps avoid fear of tax raids and keeps your gold investment safe.

भारत में सोना सिर्फ एक पीली धातु नहीं, बल्कि संस्कृति और परंपरा का अहम हिस्सा है. लोगों के मन में अक्सर सवाल आता है – घर में कितना सोना रखना legal है? असल में, कानून में सोना रखने की कोई ऊपरी सीमा तय नहीं है. अगर आपके पास valid proof है, जैसे खरीद का bill, ITR या विरासत के कागज, तो आप चाहे 1 किलो सोना रखें या 10 किलो, कोई दिक्कत नहीं है. लेकिन Income Tax raid की स्थिति में CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) ने 1994 के सर्कुलर में safe limits तय की हैं. शादीशुदा महिला के पास 500 ग्राम, कुंवारी लड़की के पास 250 ग्राम और पुरुष के पास 100 ग्राम सोना बिना proof के भी जब्त नहीं होगा. अगर सोना इससे ज्यादा है तो अधिकारी source पूछेंगे. आपके पास ज्वेलर का bill, बैंक स्टेटमेंट, gift deed या विरासत का दस्तावेज होना जरूरी है. ये नियम सिर्फ jewellery पर लागू होते हैं, coins और bars के लिए proof अनिवार्य है. Digital Gold, ETF और Sovereign Gold Bonds पर ये limit लागू नहीं होती.
