The two-day GST Council meeting starting today is set to bring major changes impacting common people. The government is considering reducing GST on essential items like two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses, spare parts, medicines, clothing, footwear, and renewable energy equipment. For instance, GST on medicines may be cut from 12% to 5%, clothes and shoes under ₹2500 may attract only 5% GST, and solar products like PV cells, pumps, and windmills could also come under the 5% slab.
On the other hand, luxury and high-value items could become costlier. Large hybrid cars (above 1500cc and 4000mm) may see GST increase from 28% to 40%. Online gaming, casinos, and betting could also attract 40% GST. Sectors like oil exploration, mining, coal, and expensive clothing/footwear may also face higher taxes.
Overall, GST could be reduced on 253 items and increased on 58 items, offering relief in festive season shopping while ensuring higher taxes on luxury products and services.
