Xi Building Biggest Aircraft Carrier As US Military Upgrade Stalls; China Ready For Taiwan Invasion?
China has begun constructing its first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, designated Type 004, at the Dalian Shipyard, according to satellite imagery reported by Defence Security Asia on September 30. Expected to displace 110,000–120,000 tons, the supercarrier will feature nuclear propulsion, four EMALS catapults, and the ability to carry over 90 fixed-wing aircraft, including next-generation stealth UAVs. It could also host early-warning platforms and shipborne laser systems for missile and drone defense. Type 004 is designed to serve as a floating joint-operations hub for the PLA Navy and is accompanied by a dedicated escort fleet. Analysts say it may surpass the USS Gerald R. Ford as the largest warship in Asia and signals China’s growing ambition to challenge U.S. naval dominance. On completion, it would mark the first nuclear-powered carrier deployed by a non-Western navy, raising strategic questions about the future U.S.-China naval balance.
