WION Greenland’s Laser Ground Station: Space Internet Gets 100x Faster | WION Podcast

The European Space Agency and Astrolight are building a next-gen optical ground station in Kangerlussuaq, designed to download massive satellite data at record speeds—ten to one hundred times faster than traditional radio systems. Thanks to Greenland’s high latitude, polar-orbiting satellites pass overhead almost every orbit, making it the perfect location for near-constant contact. Its Arctic desert climate also provides clearer skies, allowing laser beams to connect reliably without cloud disruption. Beyond speed, laser communication is harder to intercept or jam, offering a major security advantage for defence and government networks. With lower operating costs and real-time access to critical imagery for search and rescue, climate monitoring, and disaster response, this project could reshape how the world moves data from space to Earth.
