WATCH: Pope Leo XIV urges ‘concrete actions’ to combat climate change
Pope Leo XIV called for greater climate action and leadership during remarks he made in a video that was shared on the sidelines of the United Nations climate summit earlier this week in Brazil.
During his roughly 3-minute video address shared Monday with religious leaders gathered at the Amazonian Museum of Belém, the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics touted the progress created through the Paris Agreement reached a decade ago. As part of the landmark accord, nearly 200 countries, including the U.S., pledged to hold the average global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees Celsius.
“But we must be honest: it is not the agreement that is failing, we are failing in our response. What is failing is the political will of some,” Leo said. “True leadership means service and support at a scale that will truly make a difference.”
The pope called for hope and determination to be renewed, “not only in words and aspirations, but also in concrete actions.”
His remarks come as the summit, known as COP30, started its second week in Brazil. The United States is notably absent from this year’s meeting, and the Trump administration said earlier this year it would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.
