Watch A Scene From Chevittorma, A Play For The Drowning Villages Of Kerala
What is it like to live in a village where the tides washes in with regularity? As tidal flooding worsens along Kerala’s coast, amid the climate crisis, some homes are filled ankle-deep with salt water. Possessions are eroded, houses have to be abandoned for a time. These villages are home to fisherfolk, daily-wage labourers, shopkeepers. Help has not been forthcoming. There has been no talk of mitigative measures. In Kochi, as a call to action, an ancient ritual is being played out on an urban stage. The objective is to record this period of change and offer a reminder: the seas affect us all.
The play is titled Chevittorma, Malayalam for Prayer for the Dying, and is narrated by the affected villagers, not actors. The name comes from a local Catholic ritual in which loved ones whisper prayers into the ear of a person on their deathbed, as a means of comfort. Seen here is a scene depicting a palli perunnal or church festival, a reminder of how celebrations as well as day-to-day life must sometimes unfold in ankle-deep water.
