Understanding the Qipao in Dunhuang
Though the qipao dress rose to prominence in 1920s Shanghai, Professor Li Yingjun traces the history of the iconic garment to the ancient murals of Dunhuang in northwest China’s Gansu Province. He discerns early China’s understanding of the body, space and movement depicted in the flowing garment lines of the region’s murals. Such characteristics have continuously reappeared throughout the evolution of Chinese clothing, clearly visible in the structural design of the qipao.
