TTT Live Online Minister Alexander Orders Probe After US Visitor Reports Unpleasant Immigration Encounter
The Ministry of Homeland Security has launched an investigation following a disturbing report from an American visitor about her experience with an Immigration Officer at the Piarco International Airport.
According to the Ministry, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, Permanent Secretary Videsh Maharaj, and Deputy Chief Immigration Officer Alicia Acre-Youksee met virtually on Wednesday with Shontice McKenzie, who described an unpleasant encounter during her arrival in Trinidad and Tobago.
She also expressed concern about the treatment she received while seeking assistance because of her hearing impairment.
The Minister and Permanent Secretary apologised to Ms. McKenzie on behalf of the Government, the Ministry, and the Immigration Division, noting that Immigration Officers play a crucial role in shaping the visitor experience.
The Ministry says a full and impartial investigation is underway, and if any officer is found to have acted unprofessionally, disciplinary action will follow under Public Service Regulations.
