Trump avoids NATO escalation, but Iran war questions linger: Analyst
European allies are likely to be relieved following Trump’s latest remarks on Thursday (Apr 2), which stopped short of escalating tensions with NATO despite his recent criticism of the bloc. Klaus Larres, distinguished professor of History and International Affairs at the University of North Carolina, tells CNA’s Asia First that “there was general fear among the NATO allies that he would actually announce a withdrawal from NATO or scaling down of American commitment to NATO”, something that ultimately did not materialise. On Trump’s rhetoric in the speech, including potential strikes on Iran’s critical infrastructure, Larres says this should be seen as strategic pressure to push Tehran towards negotiations, with the aim of reaching a deal that would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz. But he warns that Iran maintains a “chokehold” on the key waterway, adding it would “look bad” for Trump if he declares victory while it remains shut – “that would only be a very tarnished victory.”
