Time to restore trust in UNCTAD’s core values
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says it’s time to confront the growing trust deficit that’s undermining the core values and institutions of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Speaking as the outgoing chair at the opening of UNCTAD 16 via video link, she stressed that restoring trust must be a key goal.
UNCTAD is an intergovernmental organisation within the UN that promotes the interests of developing countries in world trade.
This year’s conference is being held under the theme ‘Shaping the Future, Driving Economic Transformation for Equitable, Inclusive and Sustainable Development’.
Prime Minister Mottley adds that the Bridgetown Covenant has served not only as a mandate, but also as a strategy to guide UNCTAD’s transformation and response to global challenges of the 21st century.
She says UNCTAD has delivered on many aspects of the Bridgetown Covenant, but stresses there is still much to be done.
