The Gulf and the global supply chain
Disruptions to the global supply chain caused by the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran are more complex than the mainstream media is reporting, says Adam Hanieh, director of the SOAS Middle East Institute at the University of London.

The Gulf is not only a major center of oil production; it has also emerged as a key logistical hub for world trade. Damage to these logistical networks could have a “huge ripple effect down global supply chains,” says Hanieh.

“We’re not just talking about potential spikes in food prices … but also potentially key shortages in the commodities that are necessary to produce food, like fertilizers,” adds Hanieh, noting that many of the countries that will be most impacted by shortages “are already in conditions of famine or near famine.”
