Step into the magic of Chinese New Year: rituals from Anqing
Lan Xi, best known for her role as Shen Meizhuang – affectionately called “Mei Jie Jie” – in the hit TV series Empresses in the Palace, was born in Anqing, a small city in east China’s Anhui Province. For her, the Chinese New Year is more than a date on the calendar – it is a collection of cherished rituals that carry memory, identity and a deep sense of home.

In Anqing, traditional Chinese New Year customs remain vibrant and deeply rooted in everyday life. Families gather to share gong gao (a local rice cake), children eagerly receive red envelopes filled with blessings, and the melodies of Huangmei Opera echo through courtyards and theaters alike. As one of China’s most beloved traditional art forms, Huangmei Opera continues to find new expressions here, blending heritage with modern storytelling.

Through this video, follow Lan Xi back to her hometown and experience the unique festive spirit here.
